1942 Stuermer Article

Julius Streicher was convinced that there was an international Jewish conspiracy involving every single Jew on the planet.  Today I’m adding a 1942 article that asserts a Jewish gathering in Moscow provided proof of that conspiracy.  The orders from Jews in Moscow allegedly would be followed by their racial comrades wherever they might be.

Chinese Magazine Article on Propaganda

I often get requests for high definition images of material on the German Propaganda Archive.  Recently, I provided some images to an amazing Chinese magazine, The Outlook Magazine.  They wanted images of Nazi racial wall charts for an article on propaganda in the January 2012 issue.  That is not on-line yet — I’ll add a link when they post the issue.

Propagandizing German Women in 1941

I have a lot of instructional material on the site, directives aimed not at the public, but at propagandists.  Today I am adding instructions for leaders of Nazi women’s groups from September 1941. This was three months after the invasion of the Soviet Union had begun.  The first item works to build morale for coming difficult days.  The second section deals with sexual relations with foreigners.  Relations with Jews, of course, were prohibited. However, there was a range of other groups, and an interesting gender difference.  It was OK for men to have relationships with racially-related foreigners such as the Dutch or Scandinavians. If they married, their wives would join the German racial community.  Women, however, were not to have such relationships, since even though their partners might be “racially desirable,” the women would likely move to their husbands’ countries and thus be lost to Germany, which “needed every German.”

Another Youth Talk by Walter Groß (1935)

I recently bought two pamphlets with radio talks for the youth  by Walter Groß, head of the Nazi Party’s Racial Policy Office.  The first I added about a week ago.  Now I’m adding the second, Blood is Holy, delivered a year later (1935). Like the first, it is an effort to translate Nazi racial theory into language understandable by children.

There was a great deal of Nazi material on this topic.  The best book on the subject is Claudia Koonz’s The Nazi Conscience.

A Radio Talk for German Youth on Race (1934)

Dr. Walter Groß was the head of the Nazi Party’s Racial Policy Office.  I’m adding the text of a 1934 radio address to the German youth, which was widely reprinted. There is no mention of the Jews in this talk; it only outlines the basics of Nazi racial thinking. He committed suicide at the end of World War II under the justified apprehension that the victorious Allies would not take well to the work he had done.

A Nazi Cartoon from 1943 on Lynching in the USA

As I look for one thing, I sometimes come across other interesting material to add to existing pages. Today I’m adding a vivid caricature to the page on Lustige Blätter, a weekly satirical magazine, showing a Black being lynched. Although the Nazis viewed blacks as inferior, they sometimes pointed out contradictions in the United States.

In this case, the suggestion is that the United States is hypocritical in complaining about Nazi treatment of the Jews, given what it does to American Blacks.

Material from Nazi Gauleiter Hans Schemm

I am  adding material by the various Nazi Gauleiter. It's not easy material to find, and I'd welcome more if you happen to have something.  Today, I'm adding excerpts from a 1935 book by Gauleiter Hans Schemm, mostly on racial theory.  The book was published after his death.  Its editor attempted to bring together Schemm's various speeches and writings into a coherent whole.

Nazi Eugenics Posters

Volk und Rasse was a monthly magazine focusing on the "positive" side of Nazi racial theory, strengthening German racial stock. I've added illustrations from an August 1936 issue of displays from Nazi racial exhibitions, many of which were held throughout the country during the 1930's. Those with genetic illnesses are presented in the worst possible light. The first image shows the blessings of sterilization ("Who would want to be responsible for this?"). The second claims that, on average, a genetically ill person costs the state 50,000 Marks over sixty years. 

Nazi Racial Instruction Plans for Teachers

I've added sections from a 1937 Nazi book titled Erblehre und Rassenkunde für die Grund- und Hauptschule. It provided information for teachers on how to present Nazi racial theory to 4th through 8th graders. This was published before the German-Japanese alliance, so the Japanese are still seen as a threat to the European races.

Nazi Racial Education Wall Charts

I've added a page of educational wall charts on racial issues. These were widely used in schools during the Nazi era. My copy does not have the anti-Semitic charts that came with the package. The Nazis promoted having as many children as possible, arguing that Germany faced extinction if the birthrate did not increase, and that it would be better off without various "inferior" types of people.

More Material from Nazi Racist Magazines

I've added two covers and issue summaries to the page on Neues Volk, the Nazi Party's monthly on racial policy. I've also translated an article explaining the requirements to have Hitler become the godfather for a German child (among other things, it had to be the seventh son, or the ninth child). I recently added the volumes for Neues Volk for 1934 and 1935 to my collection. There's a lot more interesting material I may get to some day.

The notion of Hitler as godfather was new to me. If anyone knows more about this, I'd be pleased to hear from you. Hitler's surviving "godchildren" would now be in their seventies. I'm curious about what happened to them.
